What Should I Look For In A Wedding Photographer?

A few days ago I was working in my local Starbucks and I overheard someone talking about their wedding plans. They were on the phone with someone and said, “I honestly can’t tell the difference between some photographers”. As much as we all try to stand out, I have to say she was accurate. A lot of photographers have similar enough looking work, it can be a little overwhelming when looking through multiple portfolios, especially if you’re not really sure what you’re looking for. So to help all you newly engaged couples, here are a few things you should look for when choosing your wedding photographer!

1. Pay attention to the photographer’s personality. Are they sarcastic, sweet, funny? Who can you see yourself being friends with? We spend A LOT of time together on your wedding day so this one’s important. Once you find someone who you “click” with from reading their website and social media posts, schedule a phone call or video chat with them and talk face to face (voice to voice?).

2. Look for an editing style you LOVE! Your wedding photos should have a similar look and feel to the other photos on a photographer’s website. You’ll want to make sure you love the style of the photographer you pick – don’t expect them to change their editing style from dark and moody to light and airy because that’s not what we do. Once you find a style you love, ask to see a full gallery! A website can only show you so much, you’ll want to see what a full gallery from your potential photographer looks like.

3. Read reviews! This is so important. For the businesses reviews, look on Google, The Knot, WeddingWire, Facebook, etc. Just a quick Google search can show you all the places the photography business is listed and where you can see their reviews. Words from past clients about their experience is a great way to see what the photographer was like to work with and if they had any concerns. (here are mine!)
