The Sweetest Places to Elope in Charleston, SC

Edited 1/16/24: Wow, this blog post has gotten really popular since I posted it in 2020! I wanted to edit the post to update some of the information and add a couple new places I think you’ll also love ♥️

During COVID many couples have opted to elope and have a big celebration later when family can join them instead of completely giving up their wedding day. While I’m sure this isn’t exactly what some brides and grooms had in mind for their big day, I’ve become a fan of these intimate wedding ceremonies where the focus is placed on what really matters… marrying your best friend!

Today, I’m sharing some of my favorite places to elope in Charleston, SC. Charleston is home to so many beautiful locations just dripping with Spanish moss and southern charm. I’ll help you find a little slice of heaven just perfect for your wedding day!

1. Magnolia Plantation

Magnolia Plantation is one of those Charleston wedding venues you imagine when reading a southern romance novel. It’s THAT gorgeous! At Magnolia Plantation, you can get married amongst the moss covered oak trees and then stroll through the gardens to soak in all that “just married” bliss.

Update: Since this post went live, Magnolia has added the Live Oak Pavilion and it’s the perfect place for an elopement among the oak trees! Noelle and Caleb’s Magnolia Plantation elopement was magical!

2. Colonial Dorchester State Historic Site

For something a little different from the norm, Colonial Dorchester State Historic Site is home to the brick remains of the bell tower of St. George’s Anglican Church – a great centerpiece for your ceremony. Colonial Dorchester is so dreamy and feels like your own little secret forest as you stroll through the trees and along the river bank. The perfect spot for a low key elopement!

3. Folly Beach Wishing Tree

If you’ve always dreamed of a laid back beach wedding, the Folly Beach Wishing Tree is your dream come true. The wishing tree is located at the end of Folly Beach County Park and is adorned with strings of seashells, placed on its branches by wishmakers. Check out this beachy elopement at the Wishing Tree! It’s an oldie, but a goodie!

Update: Unfortunately, due to storms over the years, this spot now looks completely different. There is a new “wishing tree” adorned with seashells a little farther down the beach if you’re looking for a fun backdrop! Either way, you can’t go wrong with Folly Beach for a beach wedding!

4. White Point Garden

White Point Garden, located right next to the battery is so popular for elopements and for good reason! The park contains rows and rows of oak trees, a sweet white gazebo centerpiece, and is right next to the Charleston harbor. After a ceremony at White Point Garden, bride and groom photos around the historic streets of Downtown Charleston are a must!

5. Cypress Gardens

Cypress Gardens is such a gorgeous venue for weddings, engagement sessions, or really any type of photography! This beautiful place has been the backdrop for many movies, including the boat scene in The Notebook. The park features gorgeous cypress trees, a moss covered blackwater swamp, breathtaking natural spaces, and a picturesque stone bridge. Can you imagine anything more romantic than getting married amongst the cypress knees and then taking a row boat through the swamp?

This proposal at Cypress Gardens was so magical and during Dewayne and Ashleigh’s wedding, they got to hold a baby alligator!

6. Hampton Park

Hampton Park is so beautiful for elopements and has so many gorgeous, natural nooks and alleyways to choose from. There’s a ton of variety in this park and no visit here is exactly the same! Many people choose to get married on the crepe myrtle path or amongst the oak trees but you can also use Hampton Park’s huge gazebo for cover if it rains (a permit is required to reserve this!) After your ceremony, there are tons of spots for great photos or you’re just a skip away from the heart of downtown Charleston!

6. Flowertown Bed and Breakfast

Flowertown Bed and Breakfast is a Victorian house located in the heart of downtown Summerville. This property includes stained glass windows, Victorian furnishings, and a beautiful outdoor space just perfect for a ceremony with a secret garden feel! You can also rent one of their cozy rooms or rent out the whole place for your guests.
