You won’t regret having an engagement session.
Through the years I’ve heard a lot of people say they don’t need engagement photos because they will have wedding photos. But don’t you want some pictures of you and your other that are more casual? Use them for your invitations and your wedding website, display them in your home, display them at your wedding, turn them into a guest book, there are so many ways you can use your engagement pictures. And besides, you’ll get to know your photographer and they’ll get to know you as a couple.
Embrace the ‘golden hour’
Taking your photos right after sunrise or right before sunset can make them so so magical. You know those dreamy images with the warm, golden light? Yeah, those. While you may have to wake up at the crack of dawn, how can you not try and grab that gorgeous light?
Picking out something to wear is HARDer than it looks. Have a plan!
I know this first hand. Especially when you’re a picky dresser like I am. Pinterest is a great place to start. Find a few photos you love and try to draw inspiration from that couple’s style. And PLEASE don’t match like you’re taking a beach photo with your extended family.
It’s OK to choose a location ‘off the beaten path’.
Just pick something that makes the two of you happy 🙂
Just do what you always do with your hands.
Put them in your pockets, to your side, wrap them around your girl or guy – whatever’s natural for your body will look natural on camera. We’ll adjust you if necessary!
Your photos don’t have to be all lovey dovey.
If kisses, cuddles, and hand holding aren’t your speed, don’t worry. There are plenty of other ways to take a meaningful photo that displays your love for each other. Talk to your photographer and tell them what you want from your session. That’s our job folks!
Props are not necessary.
If there’s something that represents you as a couple and you couldn’t imagine not bringing it with you, then please do. Otherwise, it really isn’t necessary to have props in your photos. This is all about you.
The moral of this story is to just be yourselves and let your engagement session reflect who you are as a couple. There’s no one way to do engagement photos.
