Cocktail hour is an essential part of the wedding day. In this time, right after the ceremony, I normally take family portraits and “just married” bride and groom portraits. The time taken for photos after the ceremony can be shortened slightly if you’ve opted for a first look! But how can you entertain your guests during cocktail hour while you’re taking photos? Here are a few of my favorite ways!
1. Outdoor games like corn hole and giant Jenga are staples for outdoor weddings in the South. Most wedding days are perfect for a few lawn games. These can easily be DIYed or there’s a good chance you can borrow them from a friend. Guests will have fun challenging each other to these games!
2. Interactive guest books like a book of your engagement photos, polaroid guest books, or MadLibs will keep guests entertained. Ask your DJ or band to make an announcement to your guests during cocktail hour and remind them to sign the guest book. That way, no one misses it and they’ll be ready to party when you’re introduced!
3. Keep the little ones entertained with an activity table. This table at Rosey and David’s wedding included a mountain of Play-Doh, coloring books, and Legos! The adults definitely got in on the fun too!
4. Provide yummy hors d’oeuvres during cocktail hour. If you’re having a Fall wedding, you might consider an oyster shucking station like the one at Blair and Jason’s wedding! You can also pass around some unexpected combinations or have specialty drink stations like a hot cocoa bar!
When it comes to cocktail hour, the possibilities are endless! Be creative and provide guest activities that really express who you are as a couple or keep it simple with the classics. Either way, your guests will have a great time!
